Teglgården – Common in the center

Trælasten in Aarhus is a new neighborhood in the middle of the city, where a mix of homes, offices and shops are springing up on the site where the old Trælast was located.
In the Teglgården building, we have designed spaces for communities for studio apartments and senior housing – and also a possible exchange between the two.

The senior housing community is located on the ground floor and contains common areas that invite both togetherness and immersion in the communal kitchen, dining area, the opportunity to watch an international match together - and also more introverted activities such as sewing, games and reading.

In the studio apartments, we have set up common areas on all floors, including repair rooms on the ground floor, where seniors can, for example, help with how to patch a sweater elbow in exchange for a few Snapchat tips. On the other floors, there are hobby rooms, mindfulness, x-box, kitchen facilities and on the roof an activity area with exercise machines in contact with the sky and the city surroundings – all with a focus on well-being, social meetings and flexible activities for the residents.

The building was designed by Vandkunsten, and the entire project was based on a conscious strategy of recycling existing materials: half of the old administration building has been rebuilt, while bricks and wing tiles from the other half have been reused in floors, facades and private terraces. This adds character and history, while reducing the need for new resources.
