TRANSCENDENCE for 3 days of design

TRANSCENDENCE for 3 days of design

With a focus on innovation, the exhibition examines how a new use of materials can help us design sustainably.

For 3 days of design 2024, we have curated the exhibition TRANSCENDENCE on Refshaleøen in premises that previously functioned as a machine workshop for the shipyard Burmeister & Wain. In the raw industrial hall, TRANSCENDENCE conveys a dreamlike vision of a more sustainable world, where the focus on materials, sustainability and circular design creates a new dynamic exhibition concept.

The exhibition is constructed from natural and recycled materials, including hanging walls made from De Ploeg's recycled polyester fabric (Blur 45 and Tide 45) and podiums created from sawdust mixed with recycled plastic from Mater (Matek, Wood Waste), while Aesop creates a sensory experience.

The elements of the exhibition architecture are designed to have as low an environmental impact as possible, using bio-based and upcycled materials wherever possible.

Through insightful, multi-sensory installations and practical demonstrations, the exhibition will invite visitors to immerse themselves in our perception and understanding of materials. We seek to give visitors a deeper insight into the objects we create and use in everyday life. With a focus on innovation, the exhibition explores how new uses of materials can help us design a more sustainable future.

The exhibition architecture provides a floating backdrop for the exhibiting designers, craftsmen and researchers to showcase their visionary concepts and practices. Visitors will also be able to explore and immerse themselves in the rich textures of natural fibers, the elegance of smooth surfaces made from recycled composites and the transparent allure of bio-based materials.

TRANSCENDENCE features a varied program of hands-on workshops and demonstrations – from leather making to 3D printing – and invites visitors to interact with a range of sustainable design practices and innovative materials TRANSCENDENCE ultimately seeks to demonstrate that we can shape a future, that is not only functional, but also deeply enriching for both people and the planet.

TRANSCENDENCE for 3 days of design

When designing TRANSCENDENCE, one of the most important elements for us was to keep a low environmental impact in our approach to the space. Because we need it, but also to reflect the exhibition's exploration of a more sustainable future through design. We wanted to leave as small a footprint as possible, therefore recyclable or low impact materials have been used throughout the exhibition architecture. My hope is that TRANSCENDENCE not only provides an experience that lingers in the viewer's mind and body, but that it also embodies the real, tangible ways we can approach design through material choices in objects and spaces around us.
